Do you think of starting an education business when you retire in Nigeria? Great Idea!!! You may choose to set up a school for children in nursery, primary or secondary stage. Daycare, coaching, computer, or vocational training centres are also businesses that you may consider.
Whatever type of business you choose, make sure that you employ qualified teachers and instructors. You should also have some knowledge about school administration.
It is essential to point to note is that you will not start making a profit immediately. The reason is that you must have spent a lot of money setting up the school. You are not likely to get enough students immediately to recoup your investment.
When you begin the business, you will spend money on rent, furniture, and staff salaries. So, you should start on a small scale initially, e.g., if you are starting a vocational school, start with one or two programs.
There are many reasons why a business education in the sector succeeds; however, I will discuss three reasons in this post.
Table of content.
- Plan your cash flow before you start the business.
- Work with regulatory authorithes to meet the standards before you start.
- Consider all factors before you locate your school.
Plan your cash flow before you start the business.
Your cash flow is how money comes into your business (sales) and leaves your business (expenses). So, for example, you will spend a lot of money on your school’s accreditation, rent, and furniture when you start. You will also make monthly payments like paying salaries, electricity, and stationary.
You will also make monthly payments like paying salaries, electricity, and stationary. Expenses will continue for some time with little or no money coming into the business. Therefore, it will be a while before you can get enough students to register and pay school fees that will count as your inflows.
I will advise you to keep some extra cash to help you pay your bills if you do not get enough students on time. It will not be nice to run out of money before you start.

Work with regulatory authorities to meet the national standards before you start.
The second thing you have to is to get your school accredited by the relevant agency of the Ministry of Education. Your school has to be accredited by certain regulatory authorities to make sure that it meets the national standards. The best way to set up a school that meets the national standard is to get in touch with the agency in charge of your school before you start.
For example, if you want to set up a polytechnic, you should contact the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). They will give you information on what you need to set up a standard polytechnic.
If your school is accredited, it means that you have qualified staff. You can also charge higher fees because of the high-quality education your school offers.

Consider all factors before you locate your school.
The third thing is to consider factors like rent and security before you site your school. Like the people selling real estate will say, “everything depends on location.” A flat in the city center will be more expensive than a bungalow in a village. The same thing applies to the location of your school. Where you choose to put your school will determine how much you make and how soon you can start making money.
It will also determine how much you can charge as school fees. For example, if you locate your school in a residential area, you get many students from families that live in the area.
The disadvantage is that if you have to rent the building, the rent will be pretty high.
Other things you have to consider are:
- Space for extra-curricula activities like sports. The accrediting agencies will ask for this if you are starting a primary or secondary school.
- Accessibility: How easy is it for people to get to your school? Can parents quickly drop their children at school? You have to get a school bus if the school is far from the students, mainly if you operate a nursery, primary, or secondary school.
However, if your school is for teenagers or adults, make sure it is near a major road or bus stop.
- The health of your students is also essential. Parents will consider this factor when making up their minds to enroll their children in your school. It would be best if you employed qualified nurses for your sickbay. You can also have retainers with hospitals near the school location. It gives parents the confidence that their children are in safe hands.
- Due to the level of insecurity at the moment, your school should also be in a secure environment. Don’t build your school in areas where there is likely to be kidnapping or other security threats. Nobody will put their children in a school where they are not safe.

In conclusion
An education business can be gratifying emotionally if your main aim is to contribute to the development of young people.
However, if you think of making money immediately you start, you have to think of another type of business. You cannot make money from this type of business in the short term.
Another critical point to note is the administration of the school. If you don’t have practical experience in running a school, you can attend courses on school administration. You should also make sure that you employ experienced staff.
